Johann Baptist Vaňhal war zu Lebzeiten einer der beliebtesten Wiener Komponisten. Die Geschichte ist jedoch seinem Ruf nicht wohlgesonnen, das Ergebnis unverantwortlicher Äußerungen von phantasiereichen Autoren, die weder mit ihm persönlich noch mit seinen Lebensumständen vertraut waren. Es wurden wilde Behauptungen aufgestellt, dass er zu Beginn seiner Karriere von religiösem Eifer verursachter Wahnsinn so überwältigt wurde, dass er einen Teil seiner Musik verbrannte und sich danach die Qualität der Kompositionen so sehr verschlechterte, dass er das Versprechen seiner frühen Werke nie einlöste. Die Absurdität dieser Behauptung zeigt sich sofort an den Werken auf dieser Aufnahme, die eine brillante Moll-Sinfonie aus den frühen 1760er Jahren und die meisterhafte As-Dur-Sinfonie, die ein Jahrzehnt später entstand, umfasst. Seine immense Vitalität und sein Einfallsreichtum sind in beiden Werken offensichtlich und veranschaulichen, warum Vaňhal als ein so wichtiger Exponent dieser Gattung angesehen wurde.

History, however, has been unkind to his reputation, the result of irresponsible statements that were made by imaginative authors who were neither acquainted with him personally nor his circumstances. Wild claims have been made that early in his career he was so overcome by madness caused by religious fervour that he burned some of his music and thereafter the quality of compositions deteriorated so much that he never realised the promise of his early works. The absurdity of this assertion is at once apparent from the works on this recording which includes a brilliant minor-key symphony dating from the early 1760s and the masterly A flat symphony composed a decade later. His immense vitality and inventiveness are evident in both and illustrate why Vaňhal was considered such an important exponent of the genre.
