Musizieren unter Amateuren war in England als soziale Tugend nie gefragter als unter der Herrschaft der „Virgin Queen“, die selbst, wie Burney feststellte, „von früher Jugend an Musik gelehrt wurde und sich noch viele Jahre mit Musik unterhielt, nachdem sie den Thron bestiegen“. Nach ihrem Vorbild richtete man sich in den Haushalten des ganzen Landes. Der Enthusiasmus der Königin bezog sich nicht ausschließlich auf den Unterhaltungswert der Musik, denn sie wusste geschickt politisches Kapital zu schlagen aus üppigen Vergnügungen, vor allem dann, wenn sie zu Ehren eines ausländischen Würdenträgers veranstaltet wurden. Dennoch stand ihr Beispiel als Interpretin (sie spielte das Virginal, nach Angaben von Sir James Melville sogar „ganz ausgezeichnet“) und als Mäzenin, die allerdings mehr Ausländer förderte als Engländer, am Beginn einer Ära, die eine Vielzahl musikalischer Errungenschaften erlebte.

The Queen’s enthusiasm was not entirely for her own amusement, for she was quick to seize the political capital which could be made out of a lavish entertainment, particularly when laid on for a foreign dignitary, but the example which she set, as performer (who played the virginals, according to Sir James Melville, ‘excellently well’) and as patron, albeit one who employed many more foreigners than Englishmen, paved the way for an age which saw a wealth of musical achievements.

'James Bowman’s usual ease of tone is in full evidence here. He gives us meltingly sweet, gorgeous, resonant high notes, and fluidity of vocal line. Meanwhile, David Miller’s lute playing is sensitive and agile. Whether pleading for God’s redemption or wooing a lover, both singer and lutenist capture the word painting which is such a feature and strength of these songs. This is one to savour' (BBC Online)
