Eduard Franck: Streichsextette opp.41 & 50 auf CD

Die audite-Produktion mit Eduard Francks Streichsextetten setzt die Reihe von Ersteinspielungen mit Werken des Komponisten fort. Das Genre des Streichsextetts in der klassischen Erweiterung des Streichquartetts durch eine zweite Bratsche und ein zweites Violoncello erlaubt den Komponisten durch die zusätzliche Tenor- bzw. Bass-Stimme eine feinere Abstufung im dunkleren Klangbereich. Eduard Franck kam dies besonders entgegen, knüpfte er im musikalischen Inhalt doch an die klangbetonte Tradition von Mendelssohn und Brahms an, und nicht an die Tonsprache der "Neuerer" der Romantik wie Liszt und Wagner. Neben Brahms beeinflusste ihn das Studium der Werke Johann Sebastian Bachs. Auch in seinen Streichsextetten schlägt sich dies deutlich nieder: Kontrapunktik und Polyphonie prägen die Musik ebenso wie klassisch-romantische Klangideale. Francks Streichsextette sind ein sehr persönlicher Beitrag zu dieser ungewöhnlichen und seltenen Gattung sie weisen Franck als Meister der Polyphonie an der Grenze zwischen Kammermusik und orchestraler Wirkung aus. Das von der Professorin Christiane Edinger gegründete Edinger Quartett wird in dieser Aufnahme erweitert durch den Bratschisten Leo Klepper und den Cellisten Mathias Donderer beide sind Musiker des Deutschen Symphonie-Orchesters Berlin.

The genre of the string sextet, in the classical expansion of the string quartet by means of a second viola and violoncello, enables the composer to a achieve a finer gradation in the darker timbral regions, thanks to the additional tenor and bass voices. This was especially congenial to Eduard Franck, for, in terms of musical content, he was connected to the sonic tradition of Mendelssohn and Brahms rather than to the musical language of "new" romantics such as Liszt and Wagner. Besides Brahms, Franck was influenced by the study of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. This is also readily apparent in his String Sextets counterpoint and polyphony mark this music just as strongly as do classic-romantic ideals of sound. Franck's String Sextets are a very personal contribution to this unusual and rare genre they confirm Franck's mastery of polyphony on the boundary between chamber music and orchestral effect. The Edinger Quartet, founded by Prof. Christiane Edinger, is expanded in this recording by the violist Leo Klepper and the cellist Mathias Donderer both are musicians in the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.

What a beautiful disc, enshrining two superb 19th-century sextets, winningly played and well recorded. I can hardly believe that we have not had the chance to hear this music before. The performances strike me as absolutely ideal. (The Strad)
