Brittens Welt der Songs und Lieder-Zyklen: Die Vokalwerke zum 100. Geburtstag
Wenn die Musikwelt 2013 den 100. Geburtstag von Benjamin Britten feiert, dann ehrt sie einen Meister, der in allen Genres zu Hause war. Ob Oper, Chor- oder Orchesterwerk, ob Konzert oder Kammermusik: Britten – und das ist selten für einen Vertreter des 20. Jahrhunderts – überzeugt auf allen Gebieten. So sind die aktuellen Jubiläums-Editionen mit bedeutenden Aufnahmen aus dem EMI-Katalog den einzelnen Gattungen seines Schaffens gewidmet. Nun erscheinen die Vokalwerke – u. a. auch mit Dokumenten von Benjamin Britten und seinem Lebensgefährten Peter Pears.

Britten verstand sich als englischer Komponist, und so inspirierten ihn Texte der großen englischen Literaturgeschichte sowie die Volkslieder der britischen Insel. Aber er war auch Kosmopolit, suchte Anregungen bei Dichtern wie Rimbaud, Michelangelo, Hugo oder Verlaine. So finden wir in seinen Vokalzyklen mit Orchester wie der berühmten „Serenade“ Klangbilder mit britischen Wurzeln, in den „Winter Words“ trifft der Hörer folkloristische Idiome an, während sich Britten in den „Michelangelo Sonnets“ als Nachfahre großer Liedmeister wie Schubert oder Wolf bewährt. Bei etlichen Kompositionen hatte Britten die Tenorstimme seines Lebensgefährten Peter Pears im Ohr, und so bilden die Aufnahmen der Sonette von Michelangelo und John Donne von 1949 besonders authentische Schätze. Weitere Mitwirkende sind bedeutende Interpreten aus England – etwa Robert Tear, Ian Bostridge, Felicity Palmer, Barry Tuckwell und Geoffrey Parsons. Als Dirigenten wirken mit Sir Neville Marriner, Jeffrey Tate und Steuart Bedford.
