Eine verteufelt faszinierende Oper in Starbesetzung!
Der Italiener Arrigo Boito hatte das große Glück, sowohl musikalisch als auch schriftstellerisch begabt zu sein. So verfasste er das Libretto zu seiner Oper Mefistofele, die auf Goethes Faust basiert, auch selbst. Auch die Texte zu Verdis Opern Otello und Falstaff stammen aus der Feder Arrigo Boitos. Mefistofele ist der Gipfel von Boitos kompositorischen Errungenschaften und die einzige Oper, die der Komponist und Librettist Boito wirklich vollendete. Die Uraufführung fand 1868 an der Mailänder Scala statt, doch die heute üblicherweise gespielte Version schuf Boito für das Teatro Comunale in Bologna, wo sie mit großem Erfolg 1875 aufgeführt wurde. Geändert wurde insbesondere die Figur des Faust, ursprünglich für einen Bariton geschrieben, dann in eine Tenorrolle umgearbeitet. Das Werk hatte sofort internationalen Erfolg und gilt bis heute neben Gounods Faust als erfolgreichste Umsetzung des Faust-Stoffes für das Musiktheater.
