Rubinstein schrieb 1850 seine Sinfonie Nr. 1 F-Dur, Opus 40, im Jahr 1850. Das Werk ist somit ein Produkt der Zeit des fruchtbaren Studiums in St. Petersburg als Kammervirtuose der Großherzogin Elena Pawlowna, einer Zeit, in der er offensichtliche russische Einflüsse abgelehnt hatte, die später in seinem Leben einen relativ milden Ton anschlagen sollten. Die Sinfonie beginnt in feiner Mendelssohnscher Stimmung und widersetzt sich jeder Andeutung leichtfertiger Eile, ein Vorwurf, der später gegen ihn erhoben wurde. Vermutlich gehörte sie zu den vierzig oder fünfzig Kompositionen, die er vier Jahre später Liszt in Weimar zeigte. Für Liszt muss die formale Sinfonie eine untergegangene Gattung gewesen sein, so wie für Balakirew und seine Gruppe ein musikalisches Idiom von solch klassischer Reinheit ein Gräuel gewesen sein muss. Die Sinfonie ist in der Tat reiner Mendelssohn, und sie entstand, wie man sich erinnern mag, nur drei Jahre nach dem frühen Tod dieses Komponisten.
Das musikalische Porträt, Iwan der Schreckliche, basiert auf dem Werk von Lew Alexandrowitsch Mey, der literarischen Quelle von vier Opern Rimskij-Korsakows und zahlreichen Liedern der Fünf und von Tschaikowsky.
Rubinstein wrote his Symphony No. 1 in F Major, Opus 40, in 1850. The work is, therefore, a product of the time of fruitful study in St Petersburg as Chamber Virtuoso to the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, a period during which he had rejected overtly Russian influences, that were to make a relatively mild appearance later in his life. The symphony opens in fine Mendelssohnian mood, belying any suggestion of careless haste, a charge later levelled at him. It was presumably among the forty or fifty compositions he showed to Liszt in Weimar four years later. For Liszt the formal symphony must have seemed a defunct genre, much as for Balakirev and his group a musical idiom of such classical purity must have been anathema. The symphony is, in fact, pure Mendelssohn, and written, it may be recalled, only three years after that composer’s early death.
The musical portrait, Ivan the Terrible, is based on the work of Lev Alexandrovich Mey, the literary source of four of Rimsky-Korsakov’s operas and of numerous songs by the Five and by Tchaikovsky.
