Zadie Smith, 1975 geboren in Willesden, halb Jamaikanerin, halb Britin, lebt mit ihrer Mutter in Willesden Green, einer multikulturellen Gegend im Norden Londons. Mit dem Schreiben begann sie während ihres Examens am King's College in Cambridge, "als Ausgleich zu dem langweiligen Lernen".
