Julius v. Payer (1841 - 1915) erhielt seine Ausbildung an der Militärakademie in Wiener Neustadt, war als junger Offizier in Norditalien stationiert und erforschte als Bergsteiger von dort aus einzelne Regionen in den Alpen. 1869/70 nahm er an der zweiten deutschen Nordpolexpedition teil, kurz darauf leitete er zusammen mit Karl Weyprecht die erste österreichisch-ungarische Unternehmung dieser Art. Payer lebte danach als Maler zeitweise in München und veröffentlichte 1876 seinen vielgelesenen Expeditionsbericht.§Notes:
