Lucas is tormented by the idea that he could have prevented his sister's death. He still sees her, talks to her, confides in her. But his haunting is a closely guarded secret. His Editor would never have sent him to Haiti if he thought that Lucas's desire to go was partly fuelled by an interest in voodoo and the fact that many in Haiti believe that the dead exert a tangible influence over the living.

Lucas is supposed to be researching sent a documentary but he is swiftly overwhelmed by the terrible battle that unfolds between unarmed protesters and an army determined to keep a dictator in power. Surrounded by violence, fear and poverty, Lucas finds death is ever present and his search for solace sets him on a path that will define the rest of his life or kill him.
