Klappentext
A unique historical and illustrated look at the Irish Celtic cross---one of the most iconic and beloved talismans in human history.
In Celtic Cross , author Derek Bryce traces the evolution of this pagan / Christian sign---a symbol that is powerful, formidable, and varied in its meanings. The earliest Celtic crosses, dating back from nomadic times, were trees designated to be the connection between heaven and earth.
Bryce uncovers that the ornamented Celtic cross did not originate from the crucifixion. Instead, it derives from the Chi-Rho monogram, an ancient Greek symbol for the name of Christ. Long before common usage of the modern cross, even before the Christian era, the Celts used the world-axis to symbolize the link between heaven and earth.
Bryce's engaging account of Celtic symbolism is complimented by rare line illustrations of ornamental Celtic crosses from such places as Brittany, Wales, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Cumbria, Ireland, and Cornwall.
Celtic Cross uncovers its rich history, a celestial compass pointing the way through the ages on our spiritual journey.
