The Lost Broadcasts are a series of Audio and Visual CD/DVD sets featuring performances that have rarely been seen since the original transmission on German television, in some cases more than forty years ago. Some of the artists featured within the series are legendary and these “Lost” performances will be a fine addition to any music fans collection. Spooky Tooth grew out of the British band Art who in turn had grown out of the British R’n’B band the VIP’s. Adding American keyboard player Gary Wright the band released their debut album It’s All About in 1968 along with their debut single, a cover of The Band’s The Weight. The debut album also had a slowed down version of the John D Loudermilk song Tobacco Road. The following year 1969 saw the band release what is considered to be their most popular album, Spooky Two. The band reportedly sold two million copies of Spooky Two and it remains the bands bestselling album. The band was at the time unique in having two keyboardists and two contrasting vocalists in Gary Wright and Mike Harrison. The first of many splits however occurred when bassist Greg Ridley left the band to join Humble Pie. The band replaced Greg with Andy Leigh and recorded an experimental album Ceremony with French experimental electronic composer Pierre Henry an album the band do not acknowledge as part of their catalogue. Shortly after this album Gary Wright left to pursue his own career founding the band Wonderwheel. Following two albums Gary Wright and Mike Harrison re formed Spooky Tooth and recorded a further three studio albums. The band folded in November 1974 and Mick Jones went on to the Leslie West band before forming the massively successful Foreigner. Drummer Mick Kellie would eventually go on to join “New Wave” band The Only Ones and Gary Wright would enjoy huge success with his solo album The Dream Weaver in 1976.
The performances featured on this DVD package come from two different sessions. November 1968 and April 1973 The first session features the original line up of the band performing their single The Weight which was a cover of the Band song and was also Spooky Tooth’s single at the time. The second session from Spooky Tooth was filmed in April 1973 and the band are promoting You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw and we have two versions of Cotton Growing Man and Moriah alongside Old As I Was Born and Waiting For the Wind the latter track being the opening track from Spooky Two. The line up here features Gary Wright, Mike Harrison, Mick Kellie, Mick Jones and Chris Stewart.
