Lisa See, geboren in Paris, aufgewachsen in Los Angeles in Chinatown, entstammt einer chinesisch-amerikanischen Familie. Sie arbeitete dreizehn Jahre lang als Journalistin. Als Kuratorin betreut sie mehrere große Ausstellungen, die sich mit interkulturellen Beziehungen zwischen Amerika und China beschäftigen. Im Jahr 2001 wurde sie von der Organisation Chinesisch-Amerikanischer Frauen als "National Woman of the Year" ausgezeichnet; im Herbst 2003 erhielt sie den "Chinese American Museum s History Makers Award". Heute lebt sie mit ihrem Mann und ihren beiden Söhnen in Los Angeles.
