This second box of original singles from Sam Philips’s Sun Studios kicks off with Jerry Lee Lewis’s „Whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on“, an immortal Rock’n’Roll classic. The releases numbered 267 to 355 can be heard on these 10 CDs and that means the best that Rock ’n’ Roll could offer between the years 1957 and 1960. Jerry Lee Lewis alone, one of the few remaining stars of the first generation, recorded more than 150 songs featuring his boogie piano on the Sun label - passionate and energy-packed music that still after half a century has lost nothing of its power.

The King of Rock ’n’ Roll was, thanks to his hit series, unquestionably Elvis Presley, who had started with Sun but later transferred to RCA, though under Sam Phillips’s wing other young talented singers produced great songs: Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and a series of lesserknown rockabillies wanting to sing and be like Elvis. Following the release of „Shakin’“ in May 1957, Jerry Lee Lewis provided Sun with a further success selling a million, „Great balls of fire“ that appeared in the same year with the single number 281. When Bill Justis’s instrumental number „Raunchy“ (released in September 1957 by the newly-founded subsidiary Phillips International) also turned out well, Sun Records became the most successful independent label in the USA and achieved international prominence. „Breathless / Down the Line“ by Lewis appeared in 1958 and sold half a million; all in all Lewis numbers brought the label nine gold records.

Before CDs were available Sonny Burgess, Charlie Rich and Billy Riley originals, as well as those of their confrères, were sought-after collectors’ items and correspondingly expensive. They are rare today and scarcely affordable. This box contains all the songs that will make the heart of any Rock ’n’ Roll fan skip a beat: „Red Hot“, „Miss Froggie“, „Rockin’ Bandit“ and dozens of other classics of the rapidly declining Rock ’n’ Roll era. With the rise of girl groups as they were called, and beat music Sun Records were no longer able to convince young customers with Rockabilly. From 1961 onwards Sun single releases became more and more infrequent, and in 1964 there were only six. On 1st July 1969 Phillips sold the entire label catalogue.
