Parallel zu Ray Charles entwickelte Sam Cooke aus Gospel- und Popsong-Elementen einen Soul-Interpretationsstil, nahm aber auch Gospel-, Pop- und Twist-Songs auf.
Only Sixteen, Mona Lisa, Wonderful World – diese und viele weitere wunderschöne Titel sind in dieser Box enthalten. Auf insgesamt zehn Original-Alben hören wir die warme, einschmeichelnde Stimme von Sam Cooke, der für seine vorwiegend weiblichen Fans pure Erotik verkörperte. Er war einer der populärsten schwarzen US-Sänger der späten 1950er und frühen 60er Jahre.

Zu seinen zahlreichen Hits gehören unter anderem »Chain Gang«, »Another Saturday Night«, »Cupid« und »Sad Mood«. Sein »Twisting The Night Away« aus dem Jahr 1962 wurde zum Klassiker des Motown-Sounds. Das erst nach seinem Tod veröffentlichte »A Change Is Gonna Come« war eines der meistgespielten Protestlieder der US-amerikanischen Bürgerrechtsbewegung der 60er und 70er Jahre.
