Johnny war schon immer einer der angesehensten Sänger und Gitarristen im Rock und die Verbindung zwischen britischem Blues-Rock und amerikanischem Southern Rock. Während der 70er und 80er Jahre war Johnny bekannt für seinen Blues, und unterstützte die Karrieren seiner Idole wie Muddy Waters und John Lee Hooker. Als musikalisches Wunderkind wuchs er in Beaumont, Texas, mit Blues und Rock 'n' Roll auf.
