"Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy", heißt es in einem der bekanntesten Lieder von John Denver. "Sunshine" berührt viele der Themen, die dem Singer-Songwriter am wichtigsten waren: Natur, Liebe, Schönheit. Im Laufe seiner Karriere, die leider durch einen Flugzeugabsturz im Jahr 1997 im Alter von nur 53 Jahren beendet wurde, griff Denver diese Themen immer wieder auf und nutzte seinen reinen, kristallklaren Ton, um Trost zu spenden und eine Botschaft des Friedens zu verbreiten. Mit seinem jungenhaften Aussehen, seiner sanften Stimme und seiner Begeisterung für Musik und Natur war er eine der herausragenden Popstimmen der 1970er Jahre, wobei er Folk- und Country-Einflüsse in sein populäres Material einfließen ließ. Er verkaufte Millionen von Alben an eine treue Fangemeinde. Er erkannte schnell Talente: Er coverte Songs von Jerry Jeff Walker (u. a. Mr. Bojangles), James Taylor und John Prine und ging eine gute Partnerschaft mit dem Schriftsteller Joe Henry ein.
