War das erste Album »This Was« noch stark vom bluesverliebten Gitarristen Mick Abrahams geprägt, brachte Anderson nach dessen Ausscheiden auf »Stand Up« Folk-Rock-, Klassik- und Jazz-Elemente ein und formte von nun an mit Martin Barre an der Gitarre den typischen Tull-Sound. Songwriting und die musikalische Leitung lagen nun in Andersons Hand, wodurch er die Band nachhaltig in eine progressivere Richtung lenkte. Das Album, welches Anderson besonders am Herzen liegt, schaffte es auf Platz 1 der britischen Charts und brachte der Band Goldstatus in den US ein.
