Piece of Mind erwies sich als eines der einprägsamsten Alben von Iron Maiden.
1982 hatte Iron Maiden bereits zwei recht erfolgreiche Alben veröffentlicht, „Iron Maiden“ und „Killers“, und standen kurz vor der Veröffentlichung ihres dritten Albums „Number of the Beast“, auf dem ihr neuer Sänger Bruce Dickinson zu hören sein sollte. Das Album erreichte Platz 1 in Großbritannien und in zahlreichen anderen Ländern.
„Piece of Mind“ war sogar noch erfolgreicher und erreichte Platz 2 der britischen Charts. Der einzige Grund, warum es nicht Platz 1 erreichte, war, dass es sich nicht gegen Michael Jacksons unglaublich populäres Album „Thriller“ durchsetzen konnte. Mit diesem Album begannen Iron Maiden ihren eigenen, unverwechselbaren Sound zu entwickeln.
