Erfolgreich und engagiert war der 1927 geborene Harold George Belafonte zeitlebens, auch wenn es anfangs nicht so glänzend ausgesehen hatte für den Sohn eines Schiffskochs aus Martinique und einer Arbeiterin aus Jamaika. Der schwarze Entertainer war Sänger, Schauspieler, Sexsymbol und politischer Aktivist, was ihn für viele unbequem machte. Zum »König des Calypso« wurde er durch den »Banana Boat Song«, »Island in the Sun« und andere Millionenhits. 17 seiner Originalalben umfasst diese Box, darunter auch die kompletten Live-Mitschnitte aus der Carnegie Hall. Die rhythmischen Karibik-Songs – eigentlich wiederentdeckte Balladen und Volkslieder – können auch heute noch Sehnsucht nach dem warmen Süden wecken. Das Album »Calypso« von 1956 war so erfolgreich, dass es als erstes in der Musikgeschichte überhaupt eine Million Exemplare verkaufte. Nachdem ihn Otto Premingers Film »Carmen Jones« über Nacht zum Star gemacht hatte, drehte Harry Belafonte mehrere Dutzend weitere Filme, bekam 1982 den Martin-Luther-King-Preis und war Unicef- Botschafter. Seine spannende Lebensgeschichte erzählt er in seiner auch auf Deutsch veröffentlichten Autobiografie »My Song«.
