Das Album zeigt die Band auf ihrer Tournee zur Unterstützung von 2019's Distance Over Time und dem 20. Jahrestag von Metropolis Teil 2 - Scenes From a Memory. Der Titel »Distance Memories« könnte sich sowohl auf den Inhalt des Albums als auch auf die Tatsache beziehen, dass es so lange her zu sein scheint, obwohl die Auftritte im Apollo in London kurz vor dem Ausbruch der Pandemie stattfanden.

Dream Theater haben ihre vielen Live-Alben immer mit ebenso viel Sorgfalt und Leidenschaft behandelt wie eine Studio-Veröffentlichung, wenn nicht sogar noch mehr, wobei oft Videos als Ergänzung zu den Aufnahmen herausgebracht wurden. Distant Memories ist nicht anders, denn es ist die erste Live-Aufnahme der Band seit Breaking the Fourth Wall im Jahr 2014.
