Susumu Yokota, one of the constant innovators in electronic music is back with a new album. Possibly the deepest most satisfying Yokota album yet…we’d like to think it’s the one that you’ve been waiting for. Just turn out the lights, lie back and sink into this vast ocean of sound. ‘Kaleidoscope’ will take you somewhere really strange but somewhere you’ve always wanted to go. There’s been a lot of talk about ‘hypnagogic’ music in the press, well if ‘auditory hallucination’ is the library definition of the term then ‘Kaleidoscope’ really is the mother of all hypnagogic albums. It’s no wonder that both Oneohtrix Point Never and Emeralds cite Yokota as a major influence. As far removed from ambient wallpaper as Black Sabbath are from Take That, ‘Kaliedoscope’ nevertheless has a calming, narcotic effect that an induce a trance like state so strong that I struggle even to write these words. Epic in its scope and masterly in its execution, ‘Kaleidoscope’ is the album Yokota’s always hinted at. It has the raw, almost primal feel of his early albums along with the depth and complexity of his more recent work. Sometimes dark and deep like Nurse With Wound, other times light and rhythmic like Steve Reich, if you’re looking for somewhere to hang, we’ve just found the perfect place.
