Esoteric Recordings freut sich, die Veröffentlichung einer neuen, neu gemasterten 2-CD-Edition des klassischen Albums "Something Magic" von PROCOL HARUM bekannt zu geben. Das im März 1977 erschienene Album stellte eine neue Bandbesetzung mit GARY BROOKER (Gesang, Klavier), B.J. WILSON (Schlagzeug), CHRIS COPPING (Bass), MICK GRABHAM (Gitarre) und PETE SOLLEY (Orgel, Synthesizer) vor und wurde in Miami mit den Produzenten Ron und Howie Albert aufgenommen.
Obwohl das Album eine Reihe großartiger Titel wie "Strangers in Space", "Skating on Thin Ice" und "Something Magic" sowie die Mick Grabham/Keith Reid-Komposition "The Mark of the Claw" enthielt, wurde das Verhältnis zwischen der Band und ihren Produzenten angespannt, als die Albert-Brüder eine Reihe anderer für das neue Album geschriebener Titel ablehnten. Daraufhin schlug Gary Brooker vor, ein langes Stück aufzunehmen, an dem er mit dem Texter Keith Reid gearbeitet hatte: "The Worm and the Tree". Dieses orchestrierte Stück sollte eine Seite des Albums dominieren und war die erste Komposition dieser Größenordnung, die Procol Harum seit "In Held Twas in I" (auf dem 1968er Album "Shine on Brightly") aufgenommen hatten.
Ambitious, controversial, Something Magic is the final album from Procol Harum’s 60s / 70s incarnation. Recorded in Miami, and distinguished by fine new organist Pete Solley, it features classic Brooker / Reid songs like the title track and Strangers in Space, as well as The Worm and the Tree. Of particular note are two live bonus cuts recorded on Procol’s arrival in Florida: You’d Better Wait and This Old Dog have not been heard on record before.
