The Pointer Sisters released their sophomore album, That’s A Plenty, in 1974. Their debut album’s success had raised the bar pretty high, but they were still committed to using the entire breadth of American song as fodder for their act. From scat to country, from jazz to the blues, they took a crack at it all.
Opening with a personal history of rags-to-riches called “Steam Heat,” the Sisters nodded both to Gilbert & Sullivan from the past and Queen from the then-present in crafting an epic tale featuring rapid patter and impeccable harmonies. Not every band would have the confidence to take on the Dizzy Gillespie classic “Salt Peanuts,” but they blew through it on the album’s second track with a gust of youthful energy.
But perhaps the most unexpected track on the album was the Anita- and Bonnie-penned "Fairytale." It was not unheard of for black artists to score on the country chart; Charlie Pride spent his whole career there, and Ray Charles had crossed over from R&B charts in the early Sixties to shake up Nashville. But the Pointers were the first black females to ever perform at the Grand Ole Opry. According to one account, when the band was thrown a party after their Opry debut, the hotel staff assumed they were the hired help and shunted the group out the back door of the reception area.
As an album, That’s A Plenty, probably shows off the incredible diversity of the Sisters’ skills than any other. And that makes it worth hearing, even if you are already familiar with the Pointers’ more commercial history; perhaps especially if you're only familiar with their hits. These are some talented women, folks.
Hipocrates Says: Did You Know? “Fairytale” won the Grammy for Best Country Performance by Duo or Group!
