French musician (guitars and various other instruments (and singer Naïm Amor, originally from Paris, moved to Tucson, Arizon 14 years ago - because of singer Marianne Dissard who is his wife today. There he met musicians Howe Gelb or Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino. His songs translates the heat of Arizona's desert into atmospheric music and combines this with the Paris vibe of days gone by. Produced by Joey Burns (Calexico).
For Naim Amor everything is different. For the entire world Paris is the city of love, for Naim it's the city he left because of love. That was fourteen years ago. And it was pretty much during that time that the Nouvelle Chanson francaise was still dozing in the undergrounds of Nantes. The reason for his elopement was a French émigré, who lived in Tucson (AR) and who was charming his pants off. For Amor - it's his real name - Tucson is the ideal place, not only because of his lover, but also because of his admiration for American music. Everything went like clockwork for the émigré . He became friends with Howe Gelb and soon met the Calexico-founders Joey Burns and John Convertino, who have been companions till this day. Soon Amor became part of the vibrant music scene of Tucson, he did Rockabilly with Al Foul and joined a Jazz ensemble along the way. The perfect musician, who has been trained in a Parisian music conservatory, had no trouble attracting new business and soon was able to make a living from the second love of his life: music.
The step from being a guest and studio musician to becoming a performance artist, who earns his reputation, first worked out as a part of the Amor Belhom Duo, together with Thomas Belhom. The lyrics to their songs were provided by Marianne Dissard, who Amor had married by that time. With the support of Convertino and Burns, the Amor Belhom Duo recorded two studio albums and went on tour throughout the USA and Europe with their experimental, Jazz-inspired Country-Rock. After a collaboration with Calexico under the project name ABBC, both dedicated themselves to touring. At the end of a tour through France with the French chansonnier Miossec, the band parted. From this time on Naim Amor has been working on his own material. Initially he released two albums with soundtracks to real and imaginary movies, and now presents under his own name his first songwriter album "Sanguine". It is produced by Joey Burns from Calexico.
"It was already an old relationship with Joey. He had suggestions about how I could maybe work certain songs a certain way. I tried them and I learned all of a sudden a new dimension of how arrange my songs. It's a much more acoustic album than any other I made before, that's part of Joey's influence too. I play mostly electric guitars, on Sanguine, we focused on acoustic sounds."
One of the key songs of "Sanguine" is a song dealing with divorce and the carousal that follows. "Son Grand Sourire" is a wonderful waltz, whose lyrics feature autobiographical traits and which musically transports what Naim Amor, today, stands for: on the one hand, the old school chanson generation with artists like Henri Salvador, Boris Vian and Serge Gainsbourg quite clearly shines through, but doing so in a stunning combination with the sound of a western guitar. The ubiquitousness of different influences is what determines the character of this unique album: Folk, Jazz, Chanson and Country gently leave their marks in the music, without dominating its style. Instead the skillful songwriting of Naim Amor is in the fore, together with his subtle sense for fine-spun melodies. The precise production of Joey Burns supports the impressionistic mood of the album; the exact arrangements and Amor's multi-facetted handling of the guitar constantly keep "Sanguine" in a light balance.
Naim Amor draws outlines. His songs are able to catch a fugacious moment, a feeling, a mood. The atmosphere evolving from this combines the wideness of the Arizonian desert with the Parisian flair of ancient days. The best example for this symbiosis is the theme song: "Sanguine", the musical version of a poem by Jacques Prévet (who wrote numerous popular chansons, including "Les feuilles mortes") has been sung by Yves Montand in the fifties. Amor on the spur of the moment displaces Saint-Germain into the desert and European Jazz can adorn itself with a Lap Steel Solo. The sensual warm mood of this song lies like a thin film over the other songs of the album. Just like the opener "Etre la", whose rythmicity leaves the influences of Jazz and Rockabilly echoing from a distant place. "Aigre Martini" is on the one hand almost a classic chanson, on the other hand a pearl among Folk songs - the synthesis is what makes this song unique. "Les bruits", "Precious second" or " La Sieste" are Pop Folk in its best sense: elegant, transparent and carried by a melancholic lightness. "Quelle heure est-il?" - a truly cinematic song, whose atmosphere is supported by the backing vocals of Marie Frank, evocates Amor's work on soundtracks, while the fantastic "Lychee Girl" displays the influence of the Beatles' "Rubber Soul". The album concludes with "Tucson, AZ" a miniature of the Arizonian summer torridity.
"The song Tuson, Az literally describes that atmosphere. It was recorded in the summer too, anyone who knows the summers in Tucson will understand that you need to pace yourself and limit yourself to the minimum effort. So, it is a very relaxed album."
After Marianne Dissard (L'entredeux", 2008) Naim Amor is the second artist from Tucson, Arizona releasing on Le Pop Musik. The city of Tucson stands for a particular vital music scene, a countless number of venues, and last but not least the effect of a band like Calexico and the surroundings. The fact that Amor as well as Dissard are natives of France, and are singing in French, adds one more interesting aspect to this scene.
"I'm french but don't try to play on it here for example, nor trying to be more American than I am." - It's this attitude that characterizes Naim Amor and makes his music so remarkable.
