Mike Oldfields fünftes Album wurde teilweise in den Electric Lady Studios in New York City aufgenommen, und besonders die Titelsuite ist eine Anspielung auf das damalige Treiben in der Stadt. Tadellos arrangiert und produziert, wurde das Album im November 1979 veröffentlicht. Es war Oldfields erstes Album, das kürzere Songs enthielt, darunter eine wunderschöne Version von George Gershwins I Got Rhythm und ein neues Arrangement von North Star von Philip Glass.
Originally released in 1979, just six years after Mike Oldfield's debut Tubular Bells, and at the height of Oldfield's subsequent emotional disquiet, Platinum is an incredibly important piece in Oldfield's musical history, as he departs from the strictly conceptual approach used on his recordings up until this point and, for the first time ever, delivers an album based around the importance of songs rather than concept.
