Mark Selbys neues Album „Blue Highway“ nimmt uns mit auf eine kurvenreiche musikalische Reise – also passt es nur zu gut, dass das Projekt selbst mit einem unvergesslichen Schnappschuss begann, der während eines Roadtrips durch die USA entstand. „Meine Frau Tia und ich waren auf einer langen Autofahrt von Nashville nach Dallas unterwegs. Irgendwo im Norden von Texas wurden wir von einem Tornado verfolgt, sodass wir vom Kurs abkamen und geradewegs auf Gage, Oklahoma, zufuhren, dem Prärie-Städtchen, in dem ich aufgewachsen bin.“ Auf demselben zweispurigen Asphalt, auf dem Selby einst das Autofahren lernte, machte Tia durch die Windschutzscheibe ein bewegendes Photo von der einsamen, vom Sturm bedrohten Straße. Das nächste Jahr über stand das Bild eingerahmt auf Selbys Studio-Schreibtisch. „Ich habe es täglich angeschaut und dabei gedacht, dass mein nächstes Album genauso ist – Ich weiß nicht, wohin es führt, aber es liegt alles direkt vor mir.“

Wohin dieses atmosphärische Photo schließlich führte, war der Vagabundenpfad, der sich „Blue Highway“ nennt. Mit Selby im Fahrersitz, der uns sowohl über echte als auch metaphorische Straßen lenkt, umherziehend in den unterschiedlichsten Landschaften der amerikanischen Musik und den gewundenen Pfaden des Lebens und der Liebe. „Ich wollte, dass dieses Album uns mit auf eine Reise nimmt – musikalisch, lyrisch, in seiner gesamten Tragweite. Ich möchte, dass die Person, die sich das gesamte Album anhört, dafür belohnt wird, dass sie sich mit uns auf dieses Abenteuer begeben hat.“ Und was für ein Abenteuer es ist: Das Album rockt, es groovt, es knurrt und beschwichtigt und sorgt dafür, dass der Hörer sich bewegen will, fühlen will, denken will. Von der salvenartigen Eröffnungs-Proklamation ‚I Will Not Go‘ zum Bourbon Street beeinflussten ‚Gotta Be Enough‘, vom down-in-the-delta ‚Black Diamond‘ zum Riffmonster von ‚This Is Why We Rock & Roll‘, vom funkig-jazzigen ‚Trouble Wants‘ zum Shuffle von ‘Mile Zero’ und allem, was dazwischen liegt – Auf diesem Highway gibt es keine langweiligen Momente. Und während der Fahrt kann man sich sogar noch eine reiche Bilderwelt anschauen: die ursprüngliche Kraft von ‚Forty Days, Forty Nights‘, die bittersüße Geschichte einer ersten Liebe in ‚A Little While‘, die pure, sexy Groovyness von Selbys Version des Rolling Stones Stücks ‚Let’s Spend The Night Together‘.

Und hat überhaupt schon einmal jemand einen Song wie ‚Another Man‘ geschrieben, in dem ein erwachsener Mann mit seinem jüngeren Selbst abrechnet und uns seinem Kampf beiwohnen lässt?

Jedes Mal, wenn Mark Selby ein Album macht, kann er auf ein paar nicht ganz so geheime Waffen zurückgreifen: seine Co-Writerin, die bereits erwähnte Grammy-Gewinnerin Tia Sillers, den legendären Produzenten Brent Maher und den großartigen Aufnahmetechniker Charles Yingling sowie seine ewig groovenden Langzeitfreunde in der Rhythmussektion, Daryl Burgess und ‚Chopper‘ Anderson an den Drums und am Bass. Für Blue Highway hatte Selby schließlich noch zusätzliche Asse im Ärmel. „Auf meinem letzten Studioprojekt, -Nine Pound Hammer -, und unserer Live At Rockpalast‘ CD/DVD loteten wir aus, welche Kraft das Trio aus Daryl, Chopper und mir haben kann. Es war nun an der Zeit, die Palette für dieses Album noch zu erweitern“. So heuerte Selby für das neue Projekt weitere herausragende musikalische Freunde an: Die Grundbesetzung wurde um Keyboard-Ass Tim Lauer (Cheryl Crow, Robert Plant, u. v.a) und die Ausnahme-Vokalistin Crystal Taliefero (Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, u. v.a.) erweitert sowie für einige Stücke um den unverwechselbaren Gesang Tia Sillers ergänzt. Auch steuerte das Southern Rock&Soul Kraftpaket Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie, Jeff Beck) einen weltklasse Mundharmonika-Part für das Stück ‚Change A Comin‘ bei, das er zusammen mit Selby geschrieben hatte, während wir in ‚Trouble Wants‘ den gefeierten Jazz-Trompeter Rod McGaha hören. Auch die Stücke ‚Gotta Be Enough‘ und ‚Forty Days‘ verlangten förmlich nach Bläsern: Hierfür zog Selby seine Freunde Oscar Utterstrom, J. P. Frappier und Chris West heran (, die zusammen bereits für so namhafte Künstler wie Aretha Franklin, My Morning Jacket sowie gemeinsam mit Selby auf der letzten Stadion-Tour des kanadischen Superstars Johnny Reid gearbeitet hatten). Das aufstrebende Talent Rick Brantley, Co-Writer des Songs ‚Forty Days‘, tritt ebenfalls als Gast-Sänger in Erscheinung.

„Das Album mag in einem recht entspannten Tempo erdacht worden sein, das Schreiben und Aufnehmen ging allerdings sehr schnell“, sagt Selby. „Es war nicht übermäßig überdacht, und ich denke, das ist auch gut so. Tatsächlich denke ich, dass das Album von vorne bis hinten das Beste ist, das ich je gemacht habe“. Wir denken, Sie werden das genauso sehen. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Selby has written career-defining songs for artists in multiple genres and frequently contributes signature guitar work to ‘Music City’ recording sessions. As a solo artist he’s earned critical acclaim and a devoted international following, carving out an earthy, gritty sound steeped in blues and rootsy rock. His latest album, Blue Highway, will be released PepperCake.

A native of Oklahoma, Selby earned a degree in guitar and music composition at Fort Hays University in Kansas. He landed a publishing contract soon after moving to Nashville in the 1990’s, writing songs for major artists like Wynona Judd, Trisha Yearwood, Lee Roy Parnell and the Dixie Chicks, who scored a Grammy-winning number one hit with “There’s Your Trouble,” written by Selby and his wife and frequent collaborator Tia Sillers. Selby may be best known for a string of #1 Mainstream Rock singles co-written with blues-rocker Kenny Wayne Shepherd, including “Blue On Black,” which topped the chart for a record-setting 17 straight weeks and was named Billboard Magazine’s Rock Track of the Year. Selby’s publisher is Moraine Music Group in Nashville.

In 2000, Selby signed with Vanguard Records as a solo artist. He produced his debut, More Storms Comin’, with Brent Maher, setting the template for Selby recordings to come: passionate songwriting, soulful vocals and plenty of searing, toneful guitar work. The album launched the rock radio hit “She’s Like Mercury” and was followed by the critically-acclaimed 2003 release, Dirt, which Rolling Stone called an “exceptional sophomore CD,” and Vintage Guitar summed up as “11 of the best tracks of rock and roll we’ll hear this year.” American Songwriter proclaimed Selby “in the same league as Bruce Springsteen, with meaty words, a compelling voice, and tracks that have more groove than a vintage vinyl record.” Selby released a solo acoustic album, Mark Otis Selby…and the Horse He Rode In On (2006) for the German ZYX/Pepper Cake label, and returned with his band for Nine Pound Hammer (2008). Most recently, he released a live concert CD and DVD entitled One Night in Bonn (2010), recorded at the legendary German television concert series Rockpalast. 2010 also saw the release of Selby-Mills-LeMaire , featuring Selby with fellow hit songwriters Clay Mills and Sonny LeMaire.

Touring regularly over the past decade, Mark Selby has performed with everyone from Jeff Beck to B. B. King, Collective Soul, Lynrd Skynrd and many others. Recent songwriting credits include releases by David Nail, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Canadian superstar Johnny Reid, who Selby also records and tours with as guitarist and music director.
