"There’s a lot of different kinds of blues," Kenny Burrell says. "Blues comes in a variety of shapes and colors, moods, and harmonies." This 1968 album thrillingly illustrates the truth of those words.
Backed by a tight rhythm section and, on most tracks, by Don Sebesky’s imaginative arrangements, Burrell’s guitar blazes its way from the traditional twelve-bar blues of Ma Rainey to the funky modern jazz of Horace Silver. There are standards, originals, a spiritual performed unaccompanied, and even a Buffalo Springfield tune. Blues — the Common Ground extends the boundaries of blues rhythm and harmony while exploring the many forms the blues can take.
