The first version of DEATH CHANTS was recorded in 1963 - four years after the release of John Fahey's seminal Blind Joe Death. During these four years, Fahey completed his degree in philosophy and fled the East Coast, moving to Berkeley to take up postgraduate studies, and embarked on major changes. death chants bridges the differences in his playing style through two major eras in his life and is the first evidence of the mature fingerpicking style and some of the eternal musical themes he has revisited throughout his career.
At a later date, after Fahey moved to LA and became increasingly popularised, establishing a reputation which took him far beyond the confines of obscure blues, both Blind Joe Death and Death Chants were re-recorded and released with psychedelic cover art by Tom Weller. It is this later 1968 re-recording which became the subject of subsequent reissues.
The new reissue of DEATH CHANTS offers both versions, with the exception of two titles which were not re-recorded the second time round - so only one version of The Downfall Of The Adelphi Rolling Grist Mill and Dance Of The Inhabitants Of The Palace Of King Philip XIV Of Spain is available.
The difference between the two recordings of the same album are noteworthy-.-the latter more exotically mature version placed alongside its embryonic kin provides an opportunity for Fahey fans to hear and appreciate the process of the guitarist's discovery and change throughout the 60s.
