Im August 2005 flogen I Killed the Prom Queen nach Schweden, um ihr Album Music for the Recently Deceased aufzunehmen. Ende 2005 hatten sie die Aufnahme des Albums abgeschlossen, aber im Januar 2006 wurde Crafter (der damalige Sänger) aus der Band entlassen.
Anstatt das Album so zu veröffentlichen, wie es war, beschloss die Band, einen neuen Sänger zu suchen und Crafter's Tracks zu ersetzen. Ed Butcher, von der britischen Band The Hunt for Ida Wave, wurde angeworben. Neue Texte wurden geschrieben, Music for the Recently Deceased entstand.
Music for the Recently Deceased wurde von Fredrik Nordström, zu dessen weiteren Credits Dimmu Borgir, Darkest Hour, At the Gates und In Flames gehörten, und von Patrik J Sten produziert.
