If the crackling sound of Blue Note Records in the 1960s was your pleasure, then Keystone Korner in San Francisco was the place to be on Thanksgiving weekend 1981. For it was at Keystone that three prime movers of Blue Note’s freebop era--trumpeter Freddie Hubbard (b. 1938), tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson (b. 1937), and vibist Bobby Hutcherson (b. 1941)--rejoined forces. That these erstwhile Young Lions still had bite to spare is evident from the first notes of the ensemble statement of “One of Another Kind.” It’s one of three Hubbard originals here (including his best-known, “Red Clay”) that are emblematic of the best jazz in the 1970s. Backed by a thoroughly responsive West Coast rhythm section, the Blue Note albums obviously enjoyed this reunion, which presents for the first time a typically masterful Joe Henderson on “’Round Midnight.”
