AVID Jazz here presents three classic Ruby Braff albums plus, including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
“Hi Fi Salute To Bunny”, “Easy Now”, “You’re Getting To Be A Habit To Me” and the plus the previously unavailable “Jimmy Rushing And The Newport All-Stars” recorded in 1959.
Our latest release in the AVID Jazz series features a man who once said that he “attended the University of Louis Armstrong from which you never graduate”. In fact our host, Ruby Braff was often irritated as a result of recording one of our featured albums, as he was forever after cited as a Berigan disciple, whereas our earlier quote firmly places him in the Armstrong camp! Ruby Braff was born in Boston in 1927 and did indeed learn his music by listening to Louis Armstrong but along with many other great musicians like Lester Young, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby and Bessie Smith, with whom he had in common being “discovered” by Columbia’s John Hammond! On the Newport sessions liner notes Ruby is described as a “friendly, clean cut little guy with a great sense of humour and a powerful love for jazz”…..”His is a traditional style trumpet played in a modern style……he has the tone, warmth and heart…even the majesty of an Armstrong”. Settle back and listen while Ruby is joined by among others Roy Eldridge, Benny Morton, Pee Wee Russell, Mundell Lowe, Hank Jones, Vic Dickinson, Bob Wilber and Jimmy Rushing and we think you may well agree!.
All three albums plus have been digitally re-mastered for probably the finest sound quality ever!
