The sound of silence
Recently I reviewed albums of lesser known artists (Sánchez playing Albéniz), composers (Koechlin, Caplet, Hahn, Szymanovski) and works (Špaliček/Martinu). This is another forgotten composer : the Catalan Federico Mompou. He wrote very captivating piano music. Do not expect grand gestures and virtuosic fireworks. Some called his music simple, hermetic or minimalistic. This might be true, but certainly not in the negative sense of the word. Mompou is never one-dimensional, inaccessible nor boring and repetitive simplistic. His music is pure and full of wonderful sounds. This is Música Callada, music of silence. Some highlights : Canción de cuna, Cants mágics, Paisajes, Suburbis, Scènes d’enfants, Variations sur un thème de Chopin. At the piano : the master himself !
This music should not be forgotten. Strong recommendation !
