Max Richters Originalsoundtrack für Ari Folmans dokumentarischen Animationsfilm Waltz with Bashir (2008) ist von machtvoller Intensität. Er entspricht darin den eindringlichen Bildern eines Films, der von Ereignissen der jüngeren Geschichte und der Psychologie des Traumas handelt. Die Komposition, die Millionen von Menschen berührte, trug wesentlich bei zu Richters bemerkenswertem Erfolg in der Gegenwartsmusik. Deutsche Grammophon bringt den Soundtrack als internationale Wiederveröffentlichung auf CD und die Erstveröffentlichung auf LP am 14. August heraus.
2008 wurde Waltz with Bashir in Cannes uraufgeführt, doch nicht nur der Film hinterließ einen bleibenden Eindruck bei den Kritikern, sondern auch dessen Soundtrack. »Eingebettet in Max Richters bedrohlich martialische Musik, verbindet Waltz with Bashir ein Angst einflößendes Gefühl der Entfremdung mit ebenso entfremdeter Optik«, schrieb die Village Voice (New York). Richters Arbeit sei ein eigenständiges Werk, etwas, das ein Soundtrack nur selten erreiche. Die Musik trug ihm 2008 den Preis der Europäischen Filmakademie als bester Komponist ein sowie Nominierungen für mehrere andere bedeutende Preise.
