Der preisgekrönte Klangkünstler und poetische Geschichtenerzähler Jóhann Jóhannsson, Golden Globe-Preisträger sowie für Oscar, BAFTA und Grammy nominiert, war ein Phänomen und besessen von der Essenz des Klangs. Er gehörte zu den interessantesten aufstrebenden Filmkomponisten in Hollywood, die sich innovativ zwischen Filmmusik, klassischem Minimalismus, Ambient und elektronischer Musik bewegen.
Deutsche Grammophon würdigt den 2018 verstorbenen isländischen Komponisten nun mit einer Hardcover-Buch-Edition seiner wichtigsten Werke in zwei Teilen. RETROSPECTIVE I beinhaltet auf insgesamt sieben Alben Jóhannssons frühe Werke, die ein facettenreiches musikalisches Portrait zeichnen, das die Grenzen zwischen klassischer und elektronischer Musik immer wieder fließend werden lässt. Durch die Verschmelzung von minimalistischen Klängen, traditionellen Formen, sinfonischen Weiten und akustischen ebenso wie elektronischen Elementen schuf Jóhannsson poetische Klangbilder von hypnotischer Wirkung und Emotionalität.
Neben den Alben "Virðulegu Forsetar", "Dís", "And In The Endless Pause There Came The Sound Of Bees", "The Miner´s Hymns", "Copenhagen Dreams" und "Free the Mind" enthält die Edition auch den bisher unveröffentlichten Soundtrack zur dänischen Dokumentation "White Black Boy". Darüber hinaus gewähren zahlreiche Fotografien und zwei Essays weitere Einblicke in die Biografie und Musik des zurückhaltenden Klangmagiers.
