For all their commercial success it is, inevitably, the later associations of its members that become the first talking point with THE NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS. Barry McGuire, Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes with their solo careers, Gene Clark with The Byrds, Larry Ramos with The Association, Jerry Yester with the later Lovin’ Spoonful, Karen Black as an actor in such films as Nashville and Five Easy Pieces. Certainly they feature on this intriguing 30-track, deluxe Raven compilation; though there is a great deal more to the package than just spot-the-rising-star.
For aficionados of folk music and indeed 60s pop it is a treasure trove of delights - elusive film title songs (‘The Wheeler Dealers’), a rare Burt Bacharach composition (‘Three Wheels on My Wagon’), surprising 1967 psychedelia (‘I’ll Coat Your Mind With Honey’, penned by Electric Prunes writer Annette Tucker with Knickerbockers scribe Keith Colley), and an unexpected Motown variation (a Minstrels-like ballad take on ‘Where Did Our Love Go?’) among them.
