Ahmad Jamal is an original: "I'm a wordless storyteller, someone who cares about the dynamics of music because musical dynamics are human dynamics."
Creating influential Jazz for more than half a century, the pianist's second Dreyfus Jazz release, "In Search Of. . .Momentum," features an arresting amalgam of originals and treasured standards played by a trio of choice, long-time collaborators, James Cammack on bass and Idris Muhammed on drums.
As established on a myriad of memorable recordings since 1950, Ahmad Jamal's melodic inventions, his economical style, famed use of space, and deceptively simple embellishments, serve as the catalyst for transporting his trio to the highest levels of collective expression.
"I've tried every context imaginable," Jamal explains, "but the trio is the most demanding. The trio allows me a lot of space. Playing at optimum level is the challenge. What's necessary for me is establishing a meaningful statement musically, the value lies in my skill to interpret a song."
A seeker, Jamal reports that "In Search of. . . Momentum" is the first in a series of recordings for Dreyfus Jazz that will continue to feature his evolving creativity. "We are in the midst of a very prolific period and this release has me thinking about the next one. I'm excited about what we recorded here, as well as what's waiting to be recorded."
The title track, "Should I," "Island Fever, "and "I'll Take the 20," are Jamal originals and were "exciting to write. We've only used excerpts from 'I'll Take the 20,' which was inspired by George Coleman and Harold Mabern, here, and perhaps we'll record it later in its entirety. The other titles are compositions I have performed from a young age." "You Can See" is by Monty Alexander, the Jamaican Jazz pianist.
On "Whisperings," another Jamal original, with lyrics by Aziza Miller, the trio is joined by vocalist O. C. Smith, in one of his last recordings (Mr. Smith passed away in November 2001). The Louisiana-born vocalist replaced Joe Williams in the Basie Band, back in the early 60s, and later sang with Horace Silver, in addition to recording the million seller "Little Green Apples." Jamal is "especially happy with this track. "O. C. remains one of the most gifted voices in the world," he believes.

Rezensionen
