This 2 CD set provides a fascinating insight into the diverse musical sides of Archie Shepp, featuring two of his finest albums, Blasé and Live At The Pan-African Festival’, both recorded in 1969 for the BYG label.
Over the years, Archie Shepp has become one of the most revered of all jazz icons for his innovative music, which borders on the edge between free music and the blues.
This digitally-remastered 2CD set provides a fascinating insight into the diverse musical sides of Archie Shepp, featuring as it does two of his finest albums, ‘Blasé’ and ‘Live At The Pan-African Festival’, both recorded in 1969.
‘Blasé’ was recorded in Paris with the musical assistance of Jeanne Lee, Lester Bowie, harp player Chicago Beau and drummer Philly Joe Jones and captured Shepp in a distinctly bluesy mood. In contrast, ‘Live At The Pan-African Festival’ was recorded in Algiers and featured Alan Silva, Dave Burrell, Sunny Murray, Clifford Thornton as well as several Algerian and Tuareg musicians, and highlights the free-form side of Shepp in full flight.
This reissue is accompanied by new sleevenotes (English / French) from the respected French journalist Jacques Denis. (charly. co. uk)
