The singular singer & pianist Patricia Barber last put her distinct stamp on a collection of standards with her acclaimed 2000 release Nightclub. Now — on the heels of Mythologies, her ambitious song cycle based on Greek mythology — Barber returns with The Cole Porter Mix, a stunning celebration of the great Cole Porter’s songbook. The album features Barber’s longtime quartet & special guest saxophonist Chris Potter on such Porter classics as "I Get a Kick out of You," "Just One of Those Things," "What Is This Thing Called Love," and "Miss Otis Regrets." (bluenote. com)
"Joining a long tradition, Barber adds her own verse of favorites to "You're the Top," but it's her originals that really partake of the Porter sensibility. While "I Wait for Late Afternoon and You" seems metaphorically forced (contrasting Enron-like work with a tryst), "Snow" is full of sensual imagery couched in a long string of questions, beginning "Do you think of me like snow, cool, slippery and white?" and "The New Year's Eve Song" swells with romantic longing. It's a perfect, wistful ending to a superb Cole Porter mix." (allaboutjazz. com)
"Her sultry take on the Cole Porter songbook makes a perfect introduction for newcomers. The sprinkling of originals includes Snow, a sensual riposte to Porter’s list-song ethos. Barber’s compact band, with Neal Alger’s angular guitar and guest saxophone solos from Chris Potter, is a thing of beauty." (entertainment. timesonline. co. uk)
"Brilliantly supported by what has in recent years become her regular trio—bassist Michael Arnopol, guitarist Neal Alger and drummer / percussionist Eric Montzka (with Neil Smith, a newcomer to the Barber fold, subbing on three tracks)—she also receives stellar assistance from saxophonist Chris Potter on five selections. And, augmenting the eight Porter gems covered here, Barber adds three of her own compositions, all intended to capture the Cole zeitgeist." (jazztimes. com)

Rezensionen
