Der englische Orpheus der Moderne

Benjamin Britten, neben Edward Elgar der zweite große englische Komponist nach Henry Purcell, gilt zwar als Wegbereiter der Moderne, doch er verzichtete vollkommen auf avantgardistische Elfenbeintürmerei. Seine Musik orientiert sich an den großen Vorbildern der Vergangenheit, doch sie ist alles andere als anachronistisch oder gar rückständig. Stets auf kompositorisch höchstem Niveau agierend, gelang es Britten, als einer der ganz wenigen englischen Komponisten der frühen Moderne internationale Reputation zu erreichen.
