Mehr als zwei Jahrhunderte später verpasste der englische Komponist Benjamin Britten den in barocker Manier gesetzten Liedern des Komponisten Johann Christoph Pepusch ein zeitgemäßeres Klanggewand und machte aus der »Beggar’s Opera« eine in allen Farben funkelnde, frisch-frech-herbe Musikkomödie.
