Begonnen hat sie in den frühen 1960er-Jahren als Folksängerin, die sich auf der Gitarre selbst begleitete. In den siebziger Jahren begann sie immer stärker mit Jazzmusikern zusammenzuarbeiten. Von Charles Mingus über Herbie Hancock und Wayne Shorter bis zu Pat Metheny und Jaco Pastorius reicht da die Liste der Kollaborationen mit Jazzstars. Und nach wie vor sind die Songs der mittlerweile 65-jährigen Joni Mitchell beliebte Improvisationsgrundlangen für Jazzsängerinnen und Instrumentalisten. Das Ballett "The Fiddle And The Drum" der kanadischen Ballett-Kompanie "The Alberta Ballet" reflektiert Joni Mitchells künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Krieg und Umweltzerstörung in Geschichte und Gegenwart. Das Stück ist als "Dancing Joni" choreografiert, als abendfüllender Ausdruckstanz um den bedrohten Globus, zur Musik Joni Mitchells.
