Antheil starb am 12. Februar 1959 in New York City an einem Herzinfarkt. Seine Musik geriet schnell in Vergessenheit, und was an Ansehen blieb, beruhte auf einem einzigen Werk, dem Ballet Mécanique.
Randall Thompson fasste 1931 den Ruf des Ballet Mécanique in seinem Buch "Modern Music" zusammen: "In der Vorstellung des Volkes ist die Musik zum Symbol für den Höhepunkt des verrückten Modernismus geworden". Antheil selbst schrieb viel zur Verteidigung des Werkes und beschrieb es abwechselnd als "die neue vierte Dimension der Musik" und als künstlerische Sackgasse. Ursprünglich für sechzehn synchron gespielte Klaviere, Xylophone, Trommeln und Schlagzeug komponiert, hat Antheil das Werk mehrmals neu instrumentiert.
Während das Ballet Mécanique das Publikum einst empört haben mag, hat die Partitur Antheils heute ihren Platz als eines der Meisterwerke des frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts gefunden.
Die vorliegende Aufnahme folgt Antheils Überarbeitung des Balletts von 1953, die für Glockenspiel, kleinen Flugzeugpropeller, großen Flugzeugpropeller, Gong, Becken, Holzblock, Triangel, Kleine Trommel, Tamburin, kleine elektrische Glocke, große elektrische Glocke, Tenortrommel, Große Trommel, zwei Xylophone und vier Klaviere komponiert wurde.

Writing in 1931, Randall Thompson summarised the reputation of Ballet Mécanique in his book, Modern Music: "In the popular imagination music has come to symbolize the very acme of demented modernism". Antheil himself wrote much in defence of the work, alternately describing it as "the new fourth dimension of music" and an artistic dead end. Originally scored for sixteen synchronized player pianos, xylophones, drums and percussion, Antheil rescored the piece several times.
While the Ballet Mécanique may have once outraged audiences, today, Antheil’s score has found its place, as one of the masterpieces of the early twentieth century.
The present recording follows Antheil’s 1953 revision of the Ballet, scored for glockenspiel, small aeroplane propeller, large aeroplane propeller, gong, cymbal, woodblock, triangle, snare drum, tambourine, small electric bell, large electric bell, tenor drum, bass drum, two xylophones and four pianos.
